Crease-Free Shadow: Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow

It’s getting warmer out there and warmer temps mean oilier skin, especially around the eyelids. A major beauty blunder is creased eyeshadow, so I wanted to give the Maybelline Color Tattoo cream shadows a try. They boast 24-hour budge-proof wear and, while I had no desire whatsoever to sleep in my makeup, I can testify that they did not smudge during the 9-hour day I spent running around the city. A $6.99 price tag is unbeatable against the competition (Smashbox Limitless Cream Eyeshadows, $19 or MUFE Aqua Cream, $23).

For a quick and easy bronzed look I chose the color 45: Bold Gold – a medium-dark, shimmery gold. This shade looks fabulous on it’s own, but for the sake of a more dynamic tutorial, I decided to set it with a powder shadow. The great thing about these shadows is that while they can be worn sheer, effortlessly swept across the lid, they are completely buildable as well! Check out the video for the full scoop.

A Drugstore Look: Revlon PhotoReady Primer, Shadow + Sparkle

At a bare minimum the “smokey eye” consists of 4 components: primer, lid, crease, and highlight. To the everyday belle, using a multitude of shades is not only intimidating, but flashes dollar signs. Enter Revlon’s PhotoReady Primer, Shadow + Sparkle collection. These handy little palettes are not only affordable (you can nab them for under $7 just by shopping around your local drugstores!), but they are designed to be a one-stop-shop for dimensional eyeshadow looks with minimal effort.

While I haven’t been able to try all eight palettes, my pick is Metropolitan. The colors are neutral, yet buildable, and undeniably feminine.

Revlon PhotoReady Primer - Metropolitan

Revlon PhotoReady Primer Metropolitan - Shade Swatches

Primer: A sheer, shimmering, flesh tone shade with 8-hour priming claims (ahem, malarkey).  It also works nicely as a highlight for the inner corner and brow bone.

Glitter: To bump up the sparkle, add this copper shade filled with golden nuggets of delight. When doing so, be careful of fall out – upon initial application I noticed some flecks of glitter on my cheeks.

Lid: A deep brown, matte shade perfect for deepening up the “outer V” of the eye, and easily blended.

Crease:  A shimmering, silvery taupe. While it’s a gorgeous shade, I always stay clear of adding heavy shimmer to the crease. If you have fine lines or a slight hooded eye from age, shimmering creases can look dated. In my opinion, this shade is best suited as an alternate lid color.

Highlight: While very similar to the primer color, the highlight has a peach undertone. Unfortunately, it doesn’t show up so well on fairer skin.

My two cents:

  • I still suggest using a standard primer prior to applying these shadows to 1.) Make the colors pop and B.) Avoid creasing.
  • Use them wet or dry! The dark lid shade is perfect as a subtle liner when used wet.
  • Knock-off the excess. These shades are a bit powdery, so tap that brush before application to avoid fallout.
  • I would re-purchase. I always seem to find shades in palettes that I don’t like or that I would swap out, but that’s just the nature of the product. You can’t go wrong with this price.

ELF Mascara Review

ELF Mascara Review.

Mascara for only one dollar??? I know right, it seems too good to be true.

ELF cosmetics is a steal!

If you are familiar with E.L.F. (Eyes Lip Face) cosmetics, you know that it’s a pretty stand up brand at a really good price – most of their products are $1. Some can set you back a whopping $3! ELF mascara is un dinero! Score!

The mascara has two sides, Waterproof & Regular, so you’re basically getting 2 mascaras in one…and what Budget Socialite doesn’t like that deal?

But, is it any good?

First, I tried the waterproof side. I like to think of myself an expert in mascara handling, however, I had a hard time with this wand. The rule of thumb is, how the wand looks is how it’s supposed to make your lashes look. I prefer the spikey wands because I like my lashes to be separated. I also like to get as close to the lash line as possible. I was a bit clumsy with this wand and got mascara on my eyelids. It really is waterproof, because only makeup remover got this stuff off. I also worked out with it on and can tell you that it’s also sweat proof.

mascara-002Second side is regular mascara. I had the same issue with the wand, perhaps I need more practice??? But, I liked the way my lashes looks. Soft and fluffy.

elf mascara with and withoutConclusion

It’s a decent mascara and at only $1, you really can’t complain. I’m usually a bit skeptical of cosmetics for dirt cheap, but ELF has a good reputation and you can’t go wrong. You can’t compare it to say Lancome’s Oscillating mascara or the like, it just wouldn’t be fair. Overall, if I were in a pinch and needed mascara, sparing a buck for this would be the perfect solution.

So that’s it! My ELF Mascara Review. What do you think? Will you be trying this one dollar wonder? Let us know in the comments

8 Great Drugstore Beauty Buys

8 Great Drugstore Beauty Buys

We Budget Socialites know that looking great doesn’t have to come at a high price. Your local drugstore can be a haven for budget-friendly beauty products. Some work just as well as your favorite high-end products, but can be as much half the price, maybe more. These are my favorites drugstore beauty buys.

1.  Advantage Acne Spot Treatment – Clean & Clear
Price: $6.99. Clean & Clear says that 100% of people in a study showed improvements as early as day 1. While it didn’t work for me as fast as that, I can vouch for a pretty consistent 48 hour turn-around.

2. Full ‘N Soft Mascara – Maybelline
Price: $5.99. This is my go-to day mascara. I’ve tried many, more expensive mascaras and Full ‘N Soft can’t be beat. It gives your eyes great fringe, looks natural and doesn’t clump.

3. Daily Facial Cleanser – Cetaphil
Price: $8.80. Dermatologist recommended and they aren’t lying! I went for my yearly check up and asked about cleansers. Guess what she recommended, yup that’s right!

4. Chafing Gel as Make-Up Primer –  Monistat
Price: $8.99. I learned this trick on the wedding bee. This chafing gel, uses the same exact formula as Smashbox Photofinish Primer. I know it sounds nuts, but I did a side by side comparison and they look and feel the same. It’s a miracle and you get a big tube for like 1/15th of the price. Yes!

5. Mud Pack Masque – Queen Helene
Price: $3.99. An oldie but a goodie! Put this on your face, straight out of the shower (when your pores are open) and it will do stellar job of getting all the junk out of your pores.

6.  Shiny-licious Lip Gloss – Maybelline
Price: $6. Another great Maybelline product! This gloss has the benefit of being super shiny, long lasting and it’s not too sticky. Anyone who has gotten their hair stuck in their gloss, on a windy day can attest to the fact that not too sticky is a great thing in a lip gloss.

7. Rice Paper Blotting Tissues – Palladio
Price: $3.66. If you have an oily t-zone, these are a must! It’s an easy way to get rid of the shine without ruining your make up. No longer a drug-store buy because it was discontinued, I order 10 at a time on Amazon.com. Clean & Clear also makes Oil Absorbing Sheets. They are 2 bucks more and I don’t like them as much, but I will use them if Amazon ever stops selling the Palladio ones.

8.  Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion & Peel System
Price: $22. This is the priciest thing on this list but it is well worth it. Exfoliation is key to having great skin. Kiss your dead skin cells good-bye with this product. I noticed a difference right away as soon as I started using this kit.

What did you think of our drugstore beauty buys? Did your favorite make the list? What what products can’t you live without?

Oil of Olay CC Cream Review

oil of olay cc cream product review

If you’ve heard of BB cream – blemish balm, blemish base, beauty balm or beblesh balm – then you can consider CC cream to be the next generation in beauty. CC creams are also known as Color Control cream.

Oil of Olay’s description:

  • This CC Cream provides instant coverage plus correction to fight 7 signs of aging, including uneven tone, age spots and dull skin.
  • This all-in-one triple stream formula combines a daily anti-aging moisturizer, SPF 15 sunscreen and sheer tint for younger-looking skin.
  • Instant skin perfecting coverage + correction to fight 7 signs of aging + UV protection
  • Total Effects fights 7 signs of aging: Fine lines and wrinkles: Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Uneven Tone: Balances and helps even out tone. Age Spots: Reduces appearance of age spots. Gentle Exfoliation: Improves surface cell turnover. Dryness: Provides nourishing moisturization. Moisture Barrier: Strengthens skin’s natural defense against moisture loss. Luminosity: Recaptures youthful luminosity

The DL on the CC
I’ve been using this cream as I would a tinted moisturizer every morning over my anti-wrinkle serum for a few months. I like that it dries weightless, as if I’m not wearing any makeup – as any good product should. I can’t say if my surface cell turnover has been improved, but my skin does look more radiant after I apply the CC cream. I have to believe their claim that it strengthens my skin’s natural defense against moisture loss because up here in the North East, it is cold and dry, but my skin isn’t.

I have used MAC and Peter Thomas Roth’s tinted moisturizers. When comparing this drugstore brand, I think it really stands up against the high end names very well.

Me with only Oil Olay CC Cream in natural light

Me with only Oil Olay CC Cream in natural light

Pros to Oil of Olay’s CC Cream:

  •     SPF 15
  • Blends easily into my skin
  • Gives a nice finish without powder
  • Very moisturizing
  • Price – $17.99-23.99

Cons

  • If you’re used to more coverage from your foundation, then this might be too sheer for you.
